Why do I need a composite filling?

Having a filling is an extremely common dental procedure, and most people will need one at some stage in their lives to treat tooth decay or damage. Composite (tooth-coloured) fillings are a modern alternative to traditional metal fillings, made from a blend of resin. This material bonds directly to your tooth, providing a strong, durable and natural-looking restoration. Because composite fillings match the colour of your teeth, they restore both the health and appearance of your smile without any visible metal.

What does the treatment involve?

We begin by numbing the affected area with a local anaesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the procedure. The decayed or damaged part of your tooth is then carefully removed, and the area is cleaned thoroughly.

A protective liner may be placed in the tooth to help prevent sensitivity. The composite resin is then applied in small layers, with each layer hardened using a special UV light to create a strong bond with your natural tooth.

Once the filling is complete, we shape and polish it to match the natural contours of your tooth. We’ll ask you to bite down and check the feel of your new tooth-coloured filling to make sure it’s smooth and comfortable before you leave.
